Borders Group, Inc.

about Borders

Headquartered in lively Ann Arbor, Michigan, we're a publicly held company with annual sales of over $4 billion. We operate over 1,200 Borders Superstores in the U.S., smaller-format Borders Express and Waldenbooks stores, Borders Airport Stores, Borders Outlets, and a variety of seasonal businesses. In addition, we have a growing international presence with stores in the Asia Pacific and the United Kingdom, where we operate Books, Etc. stores and Paperchase Products Limited, a retailer of innovative stationery, cards, and gifts.

As a corporation, Borders has partnered with various nonprofits whose goals are to support and promote literacy and the arts. We currently partner with First Book, a nonprofit that provides disenfranchised children with books.

In addition, the Borders Group Foundation was established for employees in need; the mission is to strengthen the Borders Group family through programs that support employees and their communities. The Foundation raises funds through raffles, picnics, fairs, an annual golf outing, and, especially, the voluntary employee payroll deductions.

Our Vision
To create richer, more satisfying lives through knowledge and entertainment.

Our Mission
To be a headquarters for knowledge and entertainment.

Our Values
Community
Borders embraces its role as a vital, contributing member of the community that reaches out to connect with people. We offer knowledge and entertainment, but also a commitment to act as a responsible neighbor and partner in the towns where we live, work, and do business.

Locally, each Borders store is an integral part of the community; it is where people come to seek knowledge, insight, and enjoyment. It's also where they meet others who share their values and with whom they have a sense of community.

We hold that a community is only as interesting and inspiring as the variety within it. Diversity is not something we merely admire; it is the very fabric of what we are. It is embedded in the DNA of our mission.

Familiarity
Borders recognizes that in the comfort of the familiar, we are all more relaxed and open to new possibilities. A warm, informal gathering place makes life more colorful, nourishing relationships and encouraging connections.

The Borders work environment is open, receptive, and we believe all employees to be equally important, from the hourly bookseller to the CEO.

Discovery
Borders celebrates the universal desire to explore and find personal enrichment and knowledge. We connect the act of exploration to the moment of discovery in a way that feels serendipitous, like a stroke of good fortune.

Borders is committed to rewarding an individual's exceptional performance, and we offer many training and career development opportunities. By focusing on three specific areas—leadership development, professional skill development, and technical skill development—we offer meaningful growth to employees at every level of the organization.

Individuality
Borders understands that books, music, and movies help shape and define us all, making us individuals—original and unique. What people read, listen to, and watch are integral parts of who they are and who they aspire to be.

To us, diversity is not a buzzword or the latest trend. It means that we value the different strengths and histories each individual brings to the company, and we respect, appreciate, and encourage the free exchange of ideas.

At our company, we expect you to bring your own knowledge and personal insight to our business, to listen and make suggestions, and to enhance every individual's Borders experience.
